Funziona anche dal finestrino di un aereo: anche volando fino a 11.000 metri di quota, inquadra il panorama sotto di te e CitySpotter ti mostra i nomi delle città che stai sorvolando — le etichette restano ancorate ai luoghi reali anche mentre l'aereo o l'auto sono in movimento. È utile anche nella vita di tutti i giorni — quando giri per il mondo, da un balcone, una collina o un'auto in autostrada, e ti chiedi "che città è quella laggiù?". A differenza di una bussola normale, CitySpotter controlla anche se una montagna ti blocca la vista: se non puoi vederla davvero con i tuoi occhi, quella città non compare.
CitySpotter is an iPhone app that tells you the name of the cities you see in the distance, just by pointing your camera at the horizon. It even works from an airplane window seat: flying at up to 11,000 meters, point your phone at the view below and CitySpotter shows you the names of the cities you're flying over, with labels that stay anchored to the real places even while the plane or car is moving. It's just as handy in everyday life — touring around, standing on a balcony, a hilltop, or in a car on the highway, wondering "what city is that over there?" Unlike a normal compass, CitySpotter also checks whether a mountain is blocking your view: if you couldn't actually see a city with your own eyes, it won't show up.

Immagina ogni collina o montagna come un muro tra te e una città lontana. CitySpotter ha già dentro di sé una mappa reale del terreno — dati morfologici a 150 metri di risoluzione — e controlla in un attimo se c'è un "muro" nel mezzo: se c'è, quella città sparisce dalla lista, semplicemente perché con i tuoi occhi non potresti vederla comunque. Le distanze sono calcolate con precisione al metro. In pianura il risultato è ottimo; su terreni molto irregolari il margine di errore può essere di qualche centinaio di metri.
Think of every hill or mountain as a wall standing between you and a faraway city. CitySpotter already has a real map of the terrain built in, at 150-meter resolution, and checks in an instant whether there's a "wall" in the way. If there is, that city disappears from the list, simply because your own eyes couldn't see it anyway. Distances are calculated accurate to the meter. On flat ground the result is excellent; on very uneven terrain the margin of error can be a few hundred meters.

Scarica i paesi che sorvolerai prima di partire, poi metti la modalità aereo: il GPS funziona lo stesso, senza connessione. Apri la vista AR — l'app riconosce da sola di essere in volo — punta il telefono davanti a te e tocca Allinea. Consigli: posto finestrino (meglio senza l'ala davanti), telefono vicino al vetro per ridurre i riflessi, imposta la quota a ~11.000 m (in cabina pressurizzata il telefono non percepisce la quota reale) e, se le etichette sono troppe, alza il raggio minimo. Download the countries you'll fly over before departure, then switch airplane mode on: GPS keeps working, no connection needed. Open the AR view — the app detects it's in flight on its own — point the phone in front of you and tap Align. Tips: pick a window seat (ideally without the wing in front), hold the phone close to the glass to cut reflections, set the altitude slider to your cruising altitude (about 11,000 m) since a phone can't sense flight altitude in a pressurized cabin, and if there are too many labels, raise the minimum radius. I sensori dell'iPhone sono buoni ma non perfetti: in certi ambienti la bussola può sbagliare di qualche grado. Usa l'allineamento manuale: trascina il Sole disegnato sullo schermo sopra quello vero — o la Luna, di notte — e l'allineamento diventa esatto. In volo, invece, basta puntare in avanti e toccare Allinea quando l'app te lo propone.
iPhone sensors are good but not perfect: in some environments the compass can be a few degrees off. Use manual alignment: drag the Sun drawn on the screen onto the real Sun — or the Moon at night — and the alignment becomes exact. In flight, just point ahead and tap Align when the app offers it.
